Work package 18: Ecologically sustainable consumption and capabilities

The work package 18 “Ecologically sustainable consumption and capabilities” (Helmut Schmidt University, Hamburg [HSU]) has both a conceptual and an empirical function for extending the socio-economic reports. Consumption is to be understood in socio-economic perspective as consumer action. The concept of sustainable consumption is to be defined and operationalised multidimensionally. It is important to clarify how the concept of capabilities can be used to analyse the opportunities for ecologically sustainable behaviour.

The empirical part focuses on the aspect of environmental sustainability and examines relationships between motivation to environmental behaviour, unequal distribution of material resources as well as environmentally friendly consumption patterns actually implemented. Mobility behaviour and pro-environmental behaviour are considered as examples. The data collected in the course of the project GeNECA as part of the SOEP innovation sample (which is also funded by the BMBF) enables analysis of individual capabilities for pro-environmental behaviour and their unequal distribution as well as the importance of environmental discourses for changing behaviour in everyday life.
