Work Package 17: Consumption poverty, food poverty and alimentary participation

Work package 17 "Consumption poverty, food poverty and alimentary participation" (Institute for Social Science Research (ISF)) examines the current incidence of conditions of food poverty in Germany. Food poverty is being understood as limitation of alimentary participation, which, besides reproduction needs, includes the ability for social participation by means of social ties and activities. The aim of the study is the systematic collection of forms of food poverty at the individual level and the household level as well as the socio-structural conditions, institutional conditions and the acquisition and household constellations that food poverty (may) justify. Beyond that, coping strategies and resources that actors have available to varying degrees will be collected. For that, quantitative and qualitative analyses will be provided.

Subjective interpretations and coping strategies and perspectives of the persons concerned should be identified and classified by content analysis of the qualitative longitudinal panel "Poverty dynamics and the labour market", the use of which is also provided for work package 12. Finally, through the analysis of relevant studies, the supply side of poverty consumption – retail and gastronomy, "panels", etc., shadow work as well as proper labour – are, at least to some extent, taken into account. As a quantitative data base, the National Food Consumption Studies I and II, the consumption items from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP), the Income and Consumption Survey (EVS) and the panels of labour market and social security (PASS) come into consideration. The investigation is to identify unhealthy nutritional patterns and to show shortcomings of the existing data.
