Kapitel 9: Teilhabe im Lebensverlauf – Deutschland im Vergleich

Tanja Schmdit

Work package 5 “Employment trajectories and life courses”

The starting point of the working programme of work package 5 “Employment trajectories and life courses” (by Schmidt-Social-Research and the Sociological Research Institute [SOFI]) is the observation that in the context of a suspense-packed coexistence of continuous and discontinuous employment patterns and different family arrangements, the average development of individual indices of life courses cannot be interpreted clearly and reliably. Thus, an empirically informed construction of types is an essential methodological condition for continuous observation of development with longitudinal data.

The work package fulfils a synthesis function for the research network. It connects different biography-related indices generated in different work packages on the basis of various data sources. With different descriptive cumulated variables, which already have been developed in soeb 2, life courses and their changes in the transformation of the socioeconomic development model will be described, evaluated and typecasted according to continuity and discontinuity of the employment participation.

For the main employment phase, biography-related indicators taken from a sample survey of the integrated labour-market biographies (SIAB) of the FDZ-BA (IAB) for the current period and a historically earlier reference period will be calculated. This data will be used in the company-oriented WP 7 in order to observe the effects of operational strategies of the use of the workforce. It is further intended to conduct an event-analytical study of transition probabilities from different employment status, e.g. political-labour market interventions (and, for comparison, without such interventions).

Capabilities for the phase of young adulthood as well as for the phase of higher age will be analysed. For both stages of life, different panel data sets will be used. These data sets include information on selected dimensions of employment participation and the personal lifestyle next to subjective estimation of interviewed persons on options, their decisions and reasons for these decisions. This allows the analysis of changes in opportunity structures and personal decisions. For the phase of family formation the panel data set PairFam will be used in combination with demoDiff. For the higher employment age we use the German age survey (Deutscher Alterssurvey). Different methods will be tested for the operationalisation of the “dynamic capabilities”-concept in the life course.

Further, family and employment trajectories over the whole life course will be described in an international comparison as well as in their historical dynamic (cohort comparison). To this end, the multidimensional state space of the individual employment status will be connected with information on children in the household. The data basis for this sequence analytical and comparative approach is the database SHARELIFE.
